William John McGarvey and Jane Dougal

Moving on to James McGarvey's parents and siblings...

James' parents and my Great Great Grandparents were William John McGarvey and Jane Dougal.  They married in Desertlyn Church of Ireland, Moneymore on 2 April 1859.

William was from Feenan and Jane from Carradarragh.  At the time of his marriage William was listed as a farmer.

All 12 of the children I have found so far were born in the Moneymore area.  They are as follows:

  • Male McGarvey (b1864)
  • Female McGarvey (b1866)
  • William John McGarvey (b1868)
  • Eliza Jane McGarvey (b1868)
  • Sarah Alice McGarvey (b1869)
  • Male McGarvey (b1870)
  • Thomas McGarvey (b1870)
  • Male McGarvey (b1873)
  • James McGarvey (b1874) (My Great Grandfather)
  • Mary Ann McGarvey (b1876)
  • Samuel McGarvey (b1876)
  • Martha Jane McGarvey (b1882)

Four children did not have recorded names and may have been stillborn or died at birth. Another four of the children died under the age of 40.  My Great Grandfather James however, lived until the ripe old age of 77. I am still searching for the other three deaths.

At some point the family moved to Sailortown in Belfast.  In 1897, William John McGarvey's occupation was listed as a Carter, but by 1901 when he and Jane lived in Trafalgar Street, Belfast he was listed as a labourer.

They are listed on the 1901 census with three of their children Mary Ann, Martha and Eliza Jane, son in law James McLaughlin, boarder Susan Percy and four grandchildren John, William, Mary and Sam McLaughlin.

By 1911 William John had died and Jane was living in Weaver Street, Duncairn with her daughter Mary Ann McGarvey.  At this point Jane describes herself as blind.

William died on 9 October 1903 aged 61 years old, Jane dying 9 years later on 26 April 1912 aged 70.  They are buried together in Belfast City Cemetery.  Unfortunately their gravestone can no longer be read, but the burial records show that they are buried with 3 of their grandchildren.

As always, if the names ring any bells, get in touch.
I'd love to hear from you.

Cheers
